Shinrone Youth Initiative win at Laois/Offaly Garda Youth Awards
Shinrone Youth Initiative were award winners in the Group category for the Laois/Offaly Garda Youth Awards. This group which is facilitated by Offaly Local Development Company is made up of young people from the Shinrone area ranging in age from 13 to 19. The group has been active since 2020 and throughout the years since its formation the group has been involved in multiple community events and initiatives. These include working on the aesthetics of Shinrone as a village in conjunction with groups such as the Shinrone Sensory Walkway Committee, Tidy Towns and the Christmas lights committee.
The following are the words said by Community Garda Grace Heffernan during the speech she made awarding the group and really encapsulate everything that these young people are about -
‘These young people used their own initiative to complete tasks that were not asked of them but that they believe would benefit others. They openly encourage and support each other throughout the many different projects showing that many hands make light work. This group is selfless in their actions and everything they do is to support, help and to benefit other local groups. Their sheer selflessness, compassion and commitment to all their projects shows us what amazing and inspirational young people they are. They have demonstrated the value of community, instilled optimism in a small village and a desire to be part of something positive.’
Congratulations to all the young people involved with the Shinrone Youth Initiative –
