 Wed, 12th Dec, 2018

Offaly Local Development Company identified Clara Esker as a key area to develop a number of walks. There was a successful application made under Measure 1 of the 2018 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme to develop a number of walks around the Bog and the Esker.

Offaly  Local Development Company  promotes  the Get Ireland Walking,  initiative, supported by Healthy Ireland with the core its  aim to unify and enable the efforts of all agencies and organisations interested in promoting walking. Get Ireland Walking   Strategy has grown and is now a nationwide initiative that will deliver programmes in conjunction with all Local Partnerships companies by the end of 2018

Offaly Local Development Company has been working with Land owners in the Ballinough and Doorey area in Clara, Co. Offaly to make plans to improve the existing walk ways though the Esker. There will be 3 looped walks identified  ranging from 2km, 4km to 6km and will have a carpark and information board for easy access. The Car park will be situated just off the main Clara, Tullamore Road and will also facilitate parking for visitors to Mass Rock. We also plan to have a new seating area on top of Rabbit hill where you can take in the beautiful views of Offaly the Slieve Bloom Mountains, the Bog of Allen in Kildare, and the Devil's Bit in Tipperary and beyond. There will be safety notice on the existing paths to inform walkers that construction is in progress please obey these signs. The works have commenced and when the Carpark and signage is complete and registered it will be open to the public to use on a daily basis.
