Community-based youth initiatives

OLDC supports and delivers community-based youth initiatives throughout the county. This work is funded by the Health Promotion Services of the HSE and OLDC. OLDC facilitates the day to day management of these initiatives. Some of the actions that the project is currently undertaking include:

  • Supporting local communities to establish socially inclusive community based youth services
  • Schools projects including, Homework Clubs, Co-Facilitation of the ‘Transfer Programmes’ and ‘Copping On’ Programmes
  • Maintaining the West & South Offaly Youth Forum and supporting young people from the locality to participate in both the Dáil na nÓg and the Offaly Comhairle na nÓg
  • Summer Projects that include art camps, activity weeks, ‘Cool Dudes Food Programme’ and the summer ‘School of Rock’
  • Offaly Youth Bank Project, where youth-led community projects may be eligible to receive grant aid.
  • Support existing Youth Cafés to continue to provide the young people in their communities with a sustainable youth facility that will continue to grow into the future.

The Youth Initiative Project currently targets young people in the 10–25 age group who:

  • Do not have equal access to developmental, educational, recreational and training opportunities.
  • Live in communities where youth service provision is inadequate
  • Are not engaging fully with the school system
  • May be in danger of leaving school early
  • Are existing early school leavers
