OLDC through the Rural Development Programme is committed to encouraging and supporting sustainable energy initiatives. During 2010/2011 OLDC offered community groups an opportunity to undertake an energy audit on their local community centre or facility. The audit included a report on the facility’s current energy status and advice on how to improve and upgrade the facility to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy costs. 41 community facilities from right across County Offaly availed of the opportunity to have an energy audit completed.

A number of community facilities have implemented some or all of the recommendations in their reports using Rural Development Programme funding. They include Cloneygowan CYMS, St. Josephs Community Centre Kilcormac, Coolderry Community Centre, Ballykilmurray Community Centre, Clonbullogue Hall & Lusmagh Hall. Implementing these improvements has resulted in reduced energy bills and warmer more user friendly community facilities.
