With the decline in the economy the majority of the participants accessing the services of Birr Job Club in recent times have been male with backgrounds in construction, driving, sales, hotel work, manufacturing and mechanics. This creates a wide mix of skills and differences among participants in each Job Club programme.

Following consultation with these participants, an Unemployed Men’s Network was set up in 2010 through Birr Job Club supported by OLDC. The aim of the network is to provide a support that encourages, motivates and empowers men in their future job seeking endeavours and career development. The network is committed to providing men with the opportunity to retrain and learn new skills, network, socialise, and get out of the house.

Forty five of these men have successfully completed a FETAC level 4 Information Technology skills course held in OLDC offices in Birr and delivered by the VEC.  The majority of the men have progressed onto FETAC level 5 courses and others have enrolled in further training including  Health care support, Start your own business training, Computer network and maintenance, Business studies and Youth studies.

The staff of Birr Job Club provide participants with ongoing support in the area of goal setting, career path planning, interview techniques and more. Any man who is currently unemployed is welcome to join the network.
